Questionnaire by Lucy SD on behalf of METAL TO INFINITY WEBZINE BELGIUM
Lucy SD: Why a Swedish title was chosen for the new album?
Bastian Thusgaard: I think that was something that was discussed in the band for quite some time to recording the album actually from what I understood from the Swedish part of the band and then with this album since it changes a little bit of the direction musically and it became a theme of the album so like about „Escaping reality“ and Verkligheten is reality in Swedish so I think just the timing was right now for the Swedish title.
Lucy SD: How has been the feedback of the audience to the new album?
Bastian Thusgaard: It´s been really great, actually. Both like from the fans feedback also media has been really greatI know that it has been ranking something higher than previously in some countries and even playing the new songs live we have to from the audience reaction we had actually change our last song to Stålfågel one of the new songs and I think the band used to play “Stabbing the drama“ for ten years as a last song so just from fan like public demand almost then …it has been really really great, I think.
Lucy SD: So twenty years of Soilwork, how do you explain the variations of the sound of the band during all those years? And if the band had a chance, anything would be changed?
Bastian Thusgaard: I think…. well , now I´ve been only in the band like for three years now and being a fan of the band maybe when I joined, one of the things I have always loved about Soilwork was how they evolved and they always did something new and I think in Soilwork there is a goal to write good music is not like that all that work so you have to do that all again and also I think in contribution from new (cellphone rings) And also I think like the contribution from the new members for that has been quite of few lineup changes as well so I think it´s like the new blood into the band on several albums has a lot to do with what changed the direction as well…
Lucy SD: That would be my next question, how has been this adaptation of the new members to the band?
Bastian Thusgaard: I mean for me it has been really great, it has been a lot of work though to figure out how everything works and also even until this day it feels a little bit weird to me because I was such a big fan of the band so actually playing and recording with the band it feels strange because… I´ve recorded other albums as well but I don´t listen to them that much .. it´s like once in a while but with the new Soilwork I actually enjoy listening to it so it feels a little weird… it has been a quite of journey I would say..
Lucy SD: And speaking about the Festival, which are the Alcatraz lineup´s must-see bands in your opinion?
Bastian Thusgaard: Actually I want to see The Spirit later this evening. I really don´t know when I´ve discovered that band but actually it has been a while now, I really like their music so…I can catch songs of the set tonight so I´m gonna do that.. I´d love to see Mayhem as well but then I´m not sure if we will have time unfortunately.
Lucy SD: Which influences do you have out of metal or melodic death metal?
Bastian Thusgaard: Actually I listen to a lot of different music also not metal stuff … Ranna… I listen a lot of Black Metal actually like Dark Funeral and Behemoth, stuff like that… I really like and then like more classic Danish music actually whole… music and this band called „The midnight“ its like 80s ´wave a lot of saxophone… it´s very different what I listen to…
Lucy SD: And to finish our interview, would you like to leave a message to your loyal fans, to the fans of Soilwork from all these years?
Bastian Thusgaard: Well… I just wanna say thank you because like we… I think this is the first time for Soilwork om this festival. We have just discussed that earlier everything is very professional and the stage crew is really awesome and great sound on the stage since we´re doing festivals and so… it has been really nice, the crowd is amazing so we´re really happy to be here. Hope to get back.
Lucy SD: So thanks for the interview !
