Questionnaire by Officer Nice on behalf of METAL TO INFINITY WEBZINE BELGIUM
Hello, here Rico from the Metal To Infinity webzine. I have some questions for you, hope you’ll like them.
Officer Nice: Egeria is a totally new band. I’ve read this was some kind of cover band before. Tell us more about the history, the big examples you covered and why plans were changed…..
Maurice: I joined the band after the transition from a cover band. Before my time the band played covers from Delain, Epica and Nightwish, among others. We played cover songs as ‘Over the hills and far away’ by Nightwish and ‘Our Destiny’ by Epica. The band started with a group of friends playing cover songs for fun, but it was never the intention to be a cover band. During the same period Nicole and Max, our former keyboard player, were inspiring each other by writing the first parts of some new songs. From there on they started to write our own music. Some of the former band members only wanted to play cover songs and decided to leave the band at that point I joined the band.
Officer Nice: Who are the members of the band and should we know them from previous bands?
Stephan: First of all there’s frontwoman Nicole, who founded Egeria in 2013. There’s been a several changes to the lineup, with guitarist Maurice is being the most senior of the current members, and bass player Joris following. The latest addition is myself, replacing former band member Max on the Keyboards. For Joris, Maurice and me, Egeria is not our first band or project, but I should like to think it is our most ambitious one so far.
Officer Nice: You guys are talented. Are you guys schooled as well? Please tell us more about your love for music.
Maurice: I never had any guitar lessons, learned to play using mainly books, starting with chords and later solos. Just put on some music I liked and played along. And for the rest of the band; Nicole takes vocal lessons for many years now and she loves to learn and combine several vocal styles. Joris is a self-taught bass player and learned music theory and music notes in his early years. Stephan currently studies at the conservatory as a composer.
Officer Nice: You just released the “As Night Falls” album. What can you tell us about it? How were the reviews until now?
Stephan: “As night falls” was released last year, and it’s certainly a new milestone on our musical path. It was produced by Egeria and Matthijs Quaars – who also recorded the drums for the album – and contains 5 songs. It received a number of very positive reviews, e.g. German outlet “Keep on Rocking” gave it an 8/10. Reviewers have praised Nicole’s voice, and that Egeria have found our own sound within the genre.
Officer Nice: How about the song writing? Who was responsible for it and how did you work together before going to the studio?
Maurice: Our songs were written by Max, our former keyboard player, and Nicole. Except for the song ´Dawn Breaks´ which was completely written by Nicole herself. Nicole takes care of the lyrics and all the vocal lines. The rest of the band would them fill in their parts. Nowadays Nicole and our new keyboardplayer Stephan shall write new songs.
Officer Nice: What’s the ultimate song on this album you would advise to any reader and why?
Stephan: For me it’s definitely “A Night at the Mansion”. It’s a great and moody composition with a true narrative, while also being a powerful uptempo party track. It’s the opener of the album and the last track of our current live set. I also need to point out “Dawn breaks”, for which we produced our first music video.
Officer Nice: How about the time in studio? Any remarkable passages or histories you want to share?
Maurice: only drums and vocals were recorded in a studio, the rest was recorded at home. Regarding the drums, Matthijs Quaars, who did recording and mixing, also took care of the drumming parts, which was excellent as we still do not have a fixed drummer and he did a fantastic job.
Officer Nice: What are the lyrics all about?
Stephan: Nicole writes all the lyrics, and she finds inspiration in fantasy literature and TV shows, but also in real life experiences.
Officer Nice: What can you tell our readers, musical wise, about the band? What were the sources of inspiration?
Stephan: Of course we were inspired by the great players of the genre from Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands such as Nightwish, Xandria, Epica & Within Temptation. But we’ve also drawn inspiration from the masters of classical music, such as Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonin Dvorak.
Officer Nice: Did you read my review? Agrees or disagrees?
Stephan: I agree with everything you wrote in your review. You praise Maurice’s musical prowess as a guitar player, Nicole’s vocal style and also the balancing and production quality of the album. And yes, I also agree that Egeria is a band still at the beginning of the road, and I think you’re right to expect exciting developments in future publications.
Officer Nice: Where can our readers purchase the new album?
Maurice: Our album can be purchased on our website www.egeria-band.nl and is also available on Spotify, iTunes, Instagram and Facebook.
Officer Nice: How do you look to your local Metal scène? What is your place in this scène and what’s the goal?
Stephan: There are a few venues in Arnhem and Nijmegen with a full agenda of regional and also international metal acts, in all the varieties of the genre. I feel that symphonic metal is somewhat underrepresented in our local scene, and we’re looking to fill the gap there.
Officer Nice: What are the plans for the future?
Stephan: We’re still promoting “As night falls”, and are looking to line up more gigs in the Netherlands and beyond. At the same time, we have already begun writing new material for the next release.
Officer Nice: Any last words for our readers?
Stephan: Keep going to your local metal venue, keep supporting your regional artists, check out their material online, maybe buy an album every once in a while. And, of course, follow Egeria on Facebook, Youtube & Instagram… Egeria Official right HERE. If we come to your area, go see the show, rock the house and have a beer with us afterward. We’re looking forward to meeting you!
